AdBlue In Diesel

In Shropshire we are encountering increasingly more examples of AdBlue contamination where a person has poured AdBlue into their diesel tank. This is to a degree caused by motorists not understanding the right way to use it (important: it is not a fuel additive), and to some extent simply because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are often directly next to each other on the car.

Now, exactly what is the situation with having AdBlue in a diesel vehicle?

As AdBlue is primarily deionised water, it is as bad as putting water in to your tank. Diesel and water do not mix at all and attempting to run a diesel car on water will never work. Apart from this, the urea is extremely corrosive to your fuel system hoses and seals and is more prone to crystallisation, obstructing injectors and fuel filters. If in case you have put AdBlue into the fuel tank get it drained at the earliest opportunity. And definitely never switch on the vehicle - not even to maneuver it off the pump. In the instance that you have started the car you will almost certainly need to have the entire fuel system cleaned and fuel filters changed.
